Step into the courtroom for a gripping tale of betrayal, secrets and shocking twists! Leonard Vole stands accused of murdering a wealthy widow who made him her sole heir. As conflicting testimonies emerge, the truth becomes a puzzle that will leave you guessing until the final verdict. Adapted from Agatha Christie’s Traitor’s Hands, this tense courtroom drama will have you on the edge of your seat, questioning everything you think you know.

Scarborough Theatre Guild Rehearsal Unit – 2105 Midland Avenue, Unit 16, Scarborough, Ontario (the building is immediately north of the (former) Midland LRT station on east side, south of Progress. Closest major intersection is Ellesmere/Midland.) The unit, and both driveway exits, face Cosentino Drive)
Please prepare a short monologue (max 90 seconds). There will also be readings from the play. Prepare to be re-directed.
Please bring a copy of your resume and a photo/headshot to the audition.
Callbacks will consist of scenes from the show, performed in groups. We ask that you be available for the full time period so we have a chance to experiment with different pairings/groupings of actors.
If you would like to read the play before auditioning, the script will be on reserve at the Performing Arts Desk, 5th floor, Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge Street, and at the Community Desk of the Toronto Public Library, Cedarbrae Branch, at 545 Markham Road in Scarborough.

NOTE: Scripts will be available immediately following casting, to enable memorization time prior to the first rehearsal.
NOTE: A detailed rehearsal schedule will be available to selected cast members who will be called only when needed. Additional rehearsals will be held once the production has moved to the performance space.

We want everyone auditioning for Witness for the Prosecution to feel informed, respected, and safe. This play is recommended for audiences ages 14 and up. Below is a list of content considerations to help you decide if this production is right for you: depicts murder, emotional manipulation and mature themes.
The characters for Witness for the Prosecution have to be real and represent a variety of levels of society and influence so the audience can relate to them and care. There is some flexibility in actual ages, and we want to ensure there is a breadth of life experience across all that reflects their life experience.
Sir Wilfrid—barrister, senior defense attorney; 50’s
Leonard Vole—accused of the murder of Emily French; a likeable friendly young man; late 20’s
Romaine Vole /mysterious woman—wife of Leonard Vole, a “foreigner”; early 40’s
Janet McKenzie– Emily French’s maid; 60’s
Mr. Mayhew—solicitor, working with Leonard Vole; typical middle-aged solicitor; shrewd, dry and rather precise in manner; 50’s
Detective Inspector Hearne —in charge of the investigation into French’s murder; late 40’s
Justice Wainwright—judge in the trial; early 60’s
Mr. Myers– prosecutor, straitlaced and on top of the facts; late 40’s
Carter—chief clerk for Sir Wilfrid; 60’s
Greta– assistant to Sir Wilfrid, lightheaded but confident, self-assured; early 20’s
There is a potential for secondary roles in the courtroom. Some of the roles are not required and options are available depending on auditions and actor choices.
If required, the secondary characters in the courtroom will be doubled up with other characters
