Jane Austen’s intrepid heroine, Emma Woodhouse, is the self-proclaimed “matchmaker of Highbury”. Armed with confidence (but questionable skill), Emma’s romantic schemes backfire as tangled relationships and surprising suitors emerge. With wit, charm and plenty of misunderstandings, this lively adaptation of the classic novel brings to life a world of love, laughter, and a touch of scandal.

This is a period piece, set in the early 1800s. Actors will be expected to learn physical attitudes and postures related to class, social etiquette and costume. They will also be taught some dances of the period, so should be prepared to learn. English accents will not be required at the auditions, but actors should acquire at minimum a suggestion of an accent during rehearsal and for performance. Some actors will double in the production, playing more than one role. Because of that doubling, there may be some flexibility as to age and gender. Casting is open in other respects. Jane Austen is universal. Scarborough Theatre Guild welcomes diversity in casting and actors of all backgrounds, identities and abilities are encouraged to apply!
Characters ages are somewhat flexible, especially for actors who play dual roles.
Characters will be doubled where appropriate and company will perform as an ensemble to set the scenes (no heavy lifting!)
